Finding a way to cover a recurring medical expense (Life at stake) Best answer on the web

  • My friend is in a situation where she may lose her life due to a problem in her colon that causes periodic internal bleeding. She requires a transfusion every eight weeks that costs about $900 dollars on her current insurance and a lot (unspecified) more without insurance.
The problem at hand is that she makes a net income of at most $500 a month, which is barely enough to pay for such expenses. She has been relying on her mother for the funds to pay for her very life. Her mother, however, does not have the income to continually pay this amount and will eventually discontinue treatment. This will kill my friend in a matter of months.
A long-term solution to this problem is for my friend to get an education and a job that will pay enough to cover her cost of living. I have worked out a plan that will work out with a student loan to give her a chance at a better life. The problem is, under my plan, she will barely have enough money to graduate and then pay off her loan. (Details later) Ironically, with this $450+ monthly expense she will be unable to gain an education and thus the medical expense she is fighting to be able to pay will prevent her from obtaining the means to do so.
As far as I know, she is uneligible for Medicaid and Medicare. If she goes to school, she will likely no longer have her current insurance.
Here is my plan for her education: (This plan's main hole is that it doesn't take into account her major medical expense.)
    - Work for 2 years to gain residency status in Utah, Gross income: $32,640
    - Modest rent cost of $300/Month: $25,440
    - Modest living cost of $250/Month: $19,440
    - Auto Insurance cost of $848/Year: $17,744
    - Minor Medical costs $480/Year: $16,784
    - Estimated Misc. costs: $16,000
    - Adjust for taxes, 20% (Yes, I took the base amount and applied it.): $9,472
    - 1 Year as resident at the University of Utah: $5,272
    - Estimated Book Costs: $5,000
    - Living Costs for that year: $-1,000
    - Part time job + Full time in Summer: $1,516
    - Repeat for Year 2: $-6,400
    - Repeat for Year 3: $-14,300
    - Repeat for Year 4: $-22,250

It seems that the US Gov't wouldn't allow for someone to die from a treatable disease under the circumstance that they would be able to pay for it if given time to get an education.
Are there any loans that she could apply for to help her in this matter?
Is there any insurance that she could aquire through workgov't that would allow some coverage of this disease?
Thank you for your time. Her life will not only potentially be saved, but she will enter a better socio-economic postion from your answer.
In the event that these two questions are answered sufficiently, I will provide a decent tip. In the event that other circumstances are brought to my attention regarding my plan for her that I had not previously considered, I will offer a small tip. In the event that she acts on the information provided by your answer which will lead to her better life, I will provide a *nice* tip.
    Thank you.

  • Is it possible for your friend to move to another country that provides free health care?
